Weird low budget movies that aren't well known.
60Everybody knows about classic B movies such as Night of the Living Dead and Rocky Horror Picture Show, but there are so many films out there that remain under the radar. It seems like the mid-60s to the early 90s was a golden age for B movies, with many willing autors willing to put their own money on the line in order to make their own movie. Here’s just a few of my favorites.
Alien from L.A. is a forgotten gem from the early 90s starring supermodel Kathy Ireland. In this flick she plays Wanda Sacnussum, a squeaky-voiced geek who can't seem to keep a boyfriend. Get this; she falls into a 'bottomless pit' which leads to Atlantis. Here she finds her missing father and somehow loses her geekiness.
Another film is the over-the-top disco musical called The Apple (1979). In this bomb, Alphie and Bebe are singing stars that get caught in the web of fame and fortune. At least Bebe does and Alphie spends most of the film trying to save her from stardom! In the end God aka Mr. Topps takes them all to Heaven in his tricked out flying Rolls Royce. I’m not kidding.
Ever saw Candy? This film is from 1967 and it really reflects the times in which it was made. Film standards had just been lowered significantly and this film exploited this for all it was worth! Candy is a naïve teenager who is the object of many a man’s lust. After she’s caught making love to the Mexican gardener (played by Ringo Starr!) her family seeks peace and leaves town and one thing leads to another. Her father gets attacked and hospitalized, having to undergo surgery. While sedated he wanders off and its Candy’s responsibility to find him. Does she? Boy, does she ever!
Sleepaway camp defies genre. It's kind of disguised as a horror film when in reality it's kind of like this twisted love story. As it involves a summer camp, we immediately are misled to believe we are getting ready to watch a wannabe Friday 13th. A series of murders are being committed in the camp and it becomes something of a whodunit. In perhaps the strangest, twisted, and unexpected ending in film history, the murder is revealed.
More of a no budget movie then a low budget movie, this film is just a lot of fun. A great film for a group to watch as it doesn't require a lot of attention and it is sure to spark some fun conversation. The surprise ending is all the better when you realize the whole movie has been hinting at what it is. If you're expecting gore and real horror you may be let down, however, the creative killing methods use by the murderer should keep you entertained.
